The gift came with no name and no card—just a small, neatly tied bow around a small gift box. Nellie turned it over in her hands, curious, before finally lifting the lid.

Inside lay two delicate glass balls, perfectly round and perfectly clear. They seemed harmless, even beautiful. But the longer she stared, the more she felt the weight of their gaze. They weren’t just glass—they were watching her.

At night, she kept the box on her dresser. But the orbs called to her, pulling her attention until her temples throbbed with pain. The headaches worsened. Her dreams twisted. And then, one morning, she awoke to find nothing but darkness.

She blinked. Rubbed her eyes. Nothing. Panic clawed at her throat as she staggered across her bedroom, fumbling in the black. Her hands brushed against the gift box.
